Great Horned Owls

A good friend (Mike) had done all the work and has already found three different Great Horned Owl (GHO) nests.  He invited me to tag along this morning.  After seeing the killer shots he has been getting, getting up at 3:45 AM to make the drive and be there at first light was no problem.  Funny I struggle on mornings to get up some morning for work, but yet I can get up before the alarm when it is fun!

We got to the first nest and saw both parents, but no clear shots.  I could only see the little white tuft of a babies head.  I was working to get a better angle, and Mike said, come on, it only gets better!

So off we went to GHO nest #2.  This nest is in a small town in Iowa and the owls were not bothered by people at all.  Could have photographed them out the car window.  The nest was back lit and lighting was tough!

The father owl was watching the nest.  I have no way of knowing but Mike knows these owls and said the mother is larger.  Mike said this was his favor perch.PBKJ1308-FrameShop

On we went to the third nest.  Mike stated that this pair of owls has been nesting in the same area for the last three season.  Mike was able to call them right in.  He has yet to find the nest because the owls were in protective mode and kept flying and trying to lead us away.

This male was way more vocal, and looked skinnier too.PBKJ1356-FrameShopHe kept calling and then flying to his next perch about every 5 minutes.  I missed 3 or 4 chances at flight shots.  Finally when he lit on a clear branch, I just locked on him and wasn’t going to take an eye out of the camera until he launched.

Not sure what will get in front of my lens next, but I can finally cross GHO off my list!  A once in a lifetime experience.  I think part of the reason Mike invited me is he knows I am moving to Texas in the next month and won’t be around to put extra pressure on his nest locations!

Audry’s Talent Show

I haven’t been shooting much lately, life has been crazy.  Today I was lucky enough to get over to Audry’s school in time to see Audry and Ava act in their talent show.

Mountain Loin / Cougar

This is only my third run in with a cougar, or at least the four legged kind.

I took this first photo, it was chewing on something, like a dog would with a bone.

The first click, BAM instance eye contact!  I started to slowly back away and look for some kind of club and cover.  The cat got up and slowly started to work away and down the ridge.

I took the higher road, and tried to follow from what I thought was a safe distance!

Once it got into snow covered ground, it walked across this log, thought that was pretty cool!

It stopped one last time before bolting out of sight.  I was just glad it didn’t ever make a move towards me.  Can you image an old fat guy on ice and snow dodging a charging mountain.  I am guessing this cat was in the 85 to 100 lbs range.

Winter River Otters

I have looked and looked for River Otters out in the Great Smoky National Park (GSMNP) and have never found them.  I posted an eagle a day for the month of February, and got behind in my other adventures.  I found these guys in Central Illinois on Feb 15th.

I was pretty sure something big was keeping the hole in the ice open.  I was guessing beaver, but there wasn’t any tree damage around.  It wasn’t long before this one must have ran out of breath and popped his head out!KJ5D0514-FrameShop

Less than a minute later a second one shot out.KJ5D0534-FrameShop

The second one the smaller of the two started to chase the larger one around.  I am guessing he was the male, but no way to tell!KJ5D0622-FrameShop

I think spring must have been in the air, because it looked like Otter foreplay!  The twenty or so minutes while I watched and photographed them I kept hearing Muskrat Love playing in my head.KJ5D0666-FrameShop

Ahhhh!  They were cuddling!KJ5D0671-FrameShopHowever the larger one looked kind of annoyed and put off, so she had to be the female!  It was the day after Valentines day and maybe he forgot the card, flowers and chocolates!
